Improve your Purchasing Skills
The purchasing function is a vital part of any business. In many companies the purchasing process is simply to secure quotations from three suppliers, create a simple price abstract and then order from the one who offered the lowest price. This simple approach may work for everyday products or commodities.
For more strategic inputs, i.e. the ones that your company relies on to create your final product, perhaps a closer relationship with your supplier will be more beneficial to your company. A preferred supplier brings many benefits like reliability, the quality you require, and a single point of contact. The supplier still has to be offer a competitive price, of course, but if we know the supplier well, we can more easily discuss different strategies to lower the total cost of acquisition for the product and still allow the supplier a decent profit.
In other cases, the true cost of a material cannot be easily seen from the simple comparison of the price abstract. A closer look at the quality, delivery, discounts and other factors can reveal the true cost of ownership being offered by a supplier.
For many businesses, significant additional profits can be found by closely analyzing their purchasing policies and looking for ways to lower their purchasing costs. This possibility is often overlooked because some managers assume that the best way to reduce prices is to treat suppliers as adversaries who should be continuously pressured to drop their prices or else.
Successful companies have demonstrated that policies similar to this are counterproductive. Treating suppliers and customers as partners in a long term business relationship is a much better strategy.
